Can One Mistake Negate a Love Relationship?

In an article in The Times of India, a reporter asks if we can forgive our siblings when they have wronged us, reject our parents as young adults, but then be welcomed back into the fold, and forgive our friends for hurting our feelings or spreading rumors, why can't we forgive a lover for a one-time betrayal when we have enjoyed a meaningful relationship otherwise?
