Chuckie - A Pet Memorial Poem
by carl herman
(dallas, texas)
The sky is gray, the leaves are falling.
The chill of Fall is in the air...
And I am so sad,
Because my little buddy is gone.
He was old, no hair on his tail,
Kind of like the Velveteen Rabbit,
Character, gentleness, and a heart of gold..
He coughed at night, and his breathing had become labored.
He stumbled as he loped to his favorite place on his walk..
His head nodding as it had since he was a puppy..
I could see it in his face.
His life was fading away as the lump in his neck grew larger.
One more day..
One more wet kiss,
One more night sleeping at my feet.
He cried at night..
I cradled him with my hands,
Feeling his brave heart grow weaker.
Goodbye little buddy...
My best friend.
And I am so sad...
