He likes you, but he just doesn't want to get into a relationship straight away because he just got out of one and he's scared!
I liked this guy and I FOUND out he wanted to go out with me but after feeling excited, I started feeling afraid. I thought, "what if he breaks my heart? I've been hurt in the past by this guy so what if he hurts me again?" So I told his friend that I didn't want a boyfriend.
But does that mean I don't like him? NO! Same goes toward your crush, he likes you and cares for you, but wants to give it more time because he got badly hurt!

I did the exact same thing. The guy in question broke up with his girlfriend and then said he didn't want a relationship after all.
I was always excited when I saw that he had texted me something cute and then nothing. Everything just ended. He then told me he was sorry and got another girlfriend.
I think the best thing to do is try to move on and find someone new because that's the only way to get over someone.

After reading what you wrote, my understanding is...you liked him in a different way than he liked you. When he said all those things to you, he was complementing you; he liked and cared for you as his friend!
You read more into his statements than he meant because of your feelings for him. The fact that he had a girlfriend, which he only had eyes for, is the second reason that he couldn't see your feelings for him. He didn't say or do anything to harm you; you did that yourself.
