I took Your Heart
by Kar-Men Lam
(California)
I took your heart
It slipped into my pocket
I wonder why it’s there
I hold it in my hand
And just sit there and stare
I asked if you wanted it back
But you shook your head
"I trust you, just be careful"
You simply said
Your heart is with me
I hope I won’t break it
So I took care of it you see
But one day it got out of my sight
One day it got out of my reach
I dropped it and someone stepped on it
While I was at the beach
I look at the broken pieces with despair
You trusted me, warned me
But it seemed as if I didn’t care
I tried my best
I wrapped it up with bandages and ribbons
But the damage is done
Maybe I’ll leave your life, for good riddance,
I look down meekly to say sorry
You frowned, but said it's okay
"You are the only one I need"
You said that awful day
Tears filled my eyes,
But in a good way,
You took my hands
And together we walked away
I held your broken heart in my arms
As you wrapped me in yours
I tucked my heart in your pocket
Waiting for you to wonder
"Her heart is in my pocket,
I wonder why it’s there"
