More Than Special, Less Than Real

by Carmecille Tamayo
(For Koi (December 2010))

Friends gave that look of amusement, surprise, and question.

I gave them back a look clearly saying "even I don't know".

You call at the most unusual time just to say you missed me.
You drop by my place seeing me in the most unpleasant light.
You drink with me for merely no reason.
You call me yours and some people are crazy enough to take that seriously.

When you look at me, there are always words left unspoken.
When you hold my hand, there are promises left unsaid.
When you hug me, there are goodbyes, left unrecognized.

So what are we?
More than friends, less than lovers?
I don't know, and I really don't mind.

Let's not discuss the things we both cannot explain.
What we have is what it is.
More than special, less than real.

I'm glad you see it's less than real
because it is what it is.

What started out as fun and games
has become nothing short of regret and shame

only because too much time has passed,
too many words and not enough
too much done and not done
unfulfilled promises by both.

What seemed to be the draw initially
Has in and of itself been what pushed us apart.

Think I read that somewhere
- how love works.

Imaginary love is elusive and alluring
and more than special yet less than real.
