My Best Friend
by Cherrie F.
(Holmen)
The water flows between the trees,
As I lay my head on my knees.
I sit here alone on this cold night,
My sadness has reached the top of its height.
Two hours ago I walked into my best friend’s place,
He was nowhere to be seen, and that was a problem I had to face,
I called his name, but there was no answer,
I swept silently through his house, graceful as a dancer.
Finally, when there was only one room left,
I quickly and quietly crept.
I propped open the door,
And standing there, I froze to my core.
Laying on the bed
Was his body, cold and dead.
Someone had slit his throat,
And next to him I found a note.
I took the note and ran away.
There was nothing left to say.
I called the cops, of course, you see,
But I took the note and continued to flee,
To our secret place, where I now sit,
Where my heart was is now only an open pit.
I knew he was here next to me,
I knew he was, but he let me be.
So that’s the story, now I cry,
Looking at the note, wondering what’s inside.
I unfold the paper carefully,
I read the words dare fully,
All it said was my name and, “I love you, forever and always. I’m sorry.
