My Friend is Acting Strange

by Tara
(Chicago)

I have been friends with a guy for about three years and I admit it has been difficult to get along with him. We both have similar communication styles and I have only recently realized that we both do not communicate well at all.

The short story is, he ended our friendship last year and I did not attempt to contact him for almost three months. He contacted me on my birthday and well, we've been talking ever since.

It has been rocky to say the least. He is very nice some days, distant others. It is not quite like it used to be. I am 33 and he is 41 by the way.

When he is distant, I give him space. I admit that I don't act the same way that I used to, but I am still a little hurt and a little scared that he will hurt me again.

Recently he has really pulled away and when I confronted him and told him that I deserve to know what I did because I can't think of anything, he told me that his stress level is at an all time high, he is upset about something that has nothing to do with me, and he just can't talk to me right now.

I want to believe him, but I am afraid that this is his way of ending our friendship once again. I know we both need to sit down and talk and work things out. I told him we needed to about a week ago when he suggested we have dinner or coffee together. I am so confused. I need help please. What do I need to do?
