Scared to Get Into Relationship

I met this guy in freshman year...
met him through a group of friends when I got to high school.. We became extremely close and things got heated to the point where he admitted that he liked me.

He was too scared to get into a relationship because according to him "someone always gets hurt no matter what."

I was heartbroken.. We stopped talking for a couple months until
two years and one girlfriend later, he and I become closer than ever.

We tell each other everything and anything with no shame.. knowing his faults and weaknesses have only made me like him even more... I'm scared that if i tell him how i feel, everything we have will be lost.

This really sucks. Any advice or comments please? Thanks.
