Soldier's Lost Love

by CJ Martinez
(Missouri,US)

I'm a Sergeant In the U.S. Army Infantry. I joined when I was 18 years old. One week after I graduated from high school (back in 2005), I left to train overseas. At the time, I had a girlfriend who was and still is my only love.

I didn't know what happened to her for two and a half years. I tried calling her and sent a lot of letters but she didn't answer back. I asked around to see if anybody knew or heard anything about her but none of my friends really knew her so I thought she just forgot about me or had found anther guy.

All this time the only thing I wanted was to see her and give her a kiss like old times. I was always dreaming about her. During a firefight in Iraq, my truck was hit by an IED and I was hurt pretty bad for a couple of days. I was in and out of consciousness and I remember seeing her in my dreams ... I dreamt I was back home with her, but then I got mad at her because she never responded to my letters or phone calls and said damn her.

After I returned home from Iraq, I looked for her all over the place. I finally went to her house in the town where she lived. Her mom started crying when she saw me. She said, "Aren't you the guy who took my daughter to the prom and then became a soldier?" I nodded. She said, "Well, she died two years ago during that tornado we had in 2005, but we kept her room the way she left it and in her things, we found some stuff that is yours."

Since this time, I have never loved another girl.

RIP MY LOVE. I WILL SEE YOU SOON.
