Tales of an Alewife

Tales of an Alewife
Jim came home today
Somehow I always knew
He’d find his way
Back to me
Back to our harbor by the sea
Full of fish tales
Was he, as he regaled me endlessly
About his partners,
All the other men he’d been with
Catching salmon and catfish
Taming whales and other wild sea creatures
Boiling oysters, braving stormy winds
And choppy waters
Roughhousing it with other sailors
I never tire of his stories
For you see, I am an alewife
Always have been,
Always will be
Tonight we’ll feast on
Boiled crab and lobster
Partnered with baked potatoes
Topped with chives and butter
Alongside clam chowder and mustard greens
Hush puppies and slaw
All done up right
As moonlight spills off the harbor
He’ll hold me close
Under the heavenly host
He’ll make some offhand fuss
About my hair being a muss
Then he’ll dishevel it some more
We’ll kiss, gently at first, then urgently
As a wave of love washes over us
Then we’ll share a toast
To him, to me, to us
‘Cause I’m an alewife
Always have been,
Always will be
He’s gone away again
The sea is calling his name
His mission is never ending
But I’ve nothing to fear
‘Cause year after year
I look forward to him
Joining me once again
Just Jim, and me, and the sea
So happy as a clam I am
An alewife, I’ll always be
