Teen Relationship - When Love is Not Returned

What is the best way to get the girl you like to like you back? I have known her for about 5 years now and i have fallen harder than ever for her. What should I do?

Dear Brendan,

This is the hardest part of a teen relationship: often the person you care for doesn't love you back. I remember when I was in high school and a close friend of mine had a crush on a guy named Tony, but he didn't like her back. She was nice to him, she talked to him every chance she got, but he wasn't interested.

Every day, at school I had to listen to her beat her head against the proverbial and unanswerable question "why?" Every day, she would demand to know, "Why doesn't he like me?" Finally, I had to tell her, "Look, just because you have a crush on him, doesn't mean he has to like you back," when what I really wanted to tell her was, "He just doesn't like you and neither do I!"

The bottom line in a teen relationship or any relationship for that matter is that you can't legislate your heart. You can't make yourself love someone and you can't make someone love you back. You can't force love, period. It either happens or it doesn't. When it does, it is a gift.

My relationship advice to you is to let go and move on. Stop your suffering and find someone who will return your love. Five years is a long time to wait.
