The best player or the best teammate?
My favorite sports quote comes from the Atlanta Braves super utility player, Martin Prado, who caught my eye by his team-first attitude and his amazing story about how he grew up in a poor family and worked his way to the majors.
In 2010 he was asked about the possibility of being chosen to the 2010 MLB All-Star team and responded saying, "I don't care who's the best second baseman in the league as long as I've got the respect of my teammates the people who see me play everyday."
I think it's my favorite quote because we get so wrapped up in being the best that we forget what's most important, being a great teammate and more importantly a great person. Because at the end of the day my teammates don't go "I love her because she's the best player" they say "i love her because she's a great person not obsessed with being the best but happy to see everyone succeed and willing to help others be the best they can be. On the field and off." because I'd rather be know as the player that just did what I was supposed to did nothing more and my teammates respect me than be the home town hero that's obsessed with being the best who doesn't deserve the respect of my teammates. Which player would you rather be?
"I don't care who's the best... as long as I've got the respect of my teammates the people who see me play everyday."
